On October 31, 2008, the American Planning Association presented Mayor
Frank G. Jackson with a certificate designating the West Side Market as one of the 10 Great
Public Spaces in America.

The West Side Market is a cultural and culinary experience. Opened in 1912, the West Side Market has both an indoor market with a distinctive clock tower and a semi-enclosed "outdoor" market. The outdoor market has fresh produce and flower vendors, while the indoor portion features cheeses, dairy products, meats and ethnic specialties. From pierogi to fresh Hungarian sausage and designer pastas to croissants, there is something to suit every taste. Check website for dates and times.

The West Side Market Tenant's Assn., formed in 1915, was instrumental in implementing markethouse improvements, including a $1.1 million modernization program in 1953 and a $5 million renovation project in the late 1970s. The historical and architectural significance of the building was recognized when it was designated a Natl. Historic Landmark in 1973. The market was always a favorite stopping place for political campaigners, and during the 1980s its annual food festivals were a popular event.
